PBS Pioneers in Television Series- Westerns
FYI-Article in the Star News Online about the filming of the PBS Pioneers in Television series which will include interviews with Fess Parker, Ed Ames and Darby Hinton. Suzy

I have been asked by the Go TV producer who did the film work for Pioneers interviews of Henry, Fess, Ed and Darby to post this recent photo of Henry. He is wearing his original Manolito hat.
In my opinion, Henry is still a very good looking guy. Next to Ed as Mingo, Henry portrayal of Manolito was my favorite. Suzy

I saw in Mr Darrows credits where he did some Daniel Boone episodes. Does anyone know if Ed Ames was in the same ones? That would be a double dimples to die for sight.

Hi Cassie, I can't remember the title of the episode but Ed Ames was not in it. It had to do with Dan and Rebecca, and a kidnapping. Suzy

Thanks Suzy, It would have been neat to see Ames and Darrow together. For the younger Mingo Women here who might not be familiar with the other set of dimples, here is a High Chaparral clip:

Susie and I met Henry Darrow at one of our western film festivals and he was very sweet and easy to talk to. Susie had captures from the episode of "Daniel Boone" that he appeared in and he graciously signed them for us.
Kerry, even in the 40s, you're about 20 degrees warmer than we are up here in North Florida. And yes, we're supposed to have snow or freezing rain later today. Our humidity level is so low, that now we're at risk for fires again. But even so, we're not dealing with lake-effect snow like Susie and Keats are in NY and PA. Hopefully our cold snap will be over in a week or 10 days. Frosty hugs, Paula

Why did he ask you to post a recent picture of Henry? He's beautiful, and my sister and I were enchanted by him as youngsters, but why did he care if you posted a recent of him? Is it for promotional purposes?

Hi Keats,
The picture I posted at the producer's request was taken the same day as the picture that appeared in the news paper (staronline) The picture in the newspaper was not very good. Also, the producer thought that MW ladies would like to see him in his Manolito hat.

Hi All,
I don't remember the High Chaparral. But I do remember Mr. Darrow in other shows. I thought that he was handsome, and a good actor too.

being half hispanic myself; I do remember all the Latino movie stars and think they are all hunks but didn't realize he is up there in age too. How lucky that some of you could meet him and others! I only see them in my dreams

I don't remember specific episodes of High Chapparal, but my sister and I would yell "Monolito Montoya!!!", throw down a hat and do a Mexican hat dance! Just something silly kids do, but if anyone yells his name today, I would probably pop to attention and throw down the hat and dance!

You can watch complete episodes on Youtube. Like Daniel Boone shows, they are addictive.

Hi Keats,
Since we all seem to have the same facination with Mr. Darrow, and the episodes of High Chaparral----perhaps some of our talented writers would be willing to do a "cross-over" fiction with both shows!! I would be anxious to see how an adventure with Boone and Mingo could play out with John, Buck and Manoloito. Might make for interesting reading my friends! Can you imgaine their surprise at Mingos' education...???? Just a thought.....
Wondering..

Hi Rebecca,
I have thought that a cross-over story would be a fun thing to do also. I am currently writing a follow-up to Lights. Camera, Action that involves time travel again except in reverse. It would be possible to bring the story lines together using time travel. Cindy and I will be together for a few days in February when my husband and I go to Phoenix. We will be near that area where the HC was filmed. Maybe I can talk her into doing a story together. I know that you have come up with suggestions for stories that Cindy has written so if you have any ideas for this cross-over story, let us know.

Hi Ladies,
I am a big fan of "The Rifleman", and "Bonanza". I have been thinking of writing a story on each with Mingo in it. The only thing is that Mingo was born a hundred years later. Is anyone apposed to that? Let me know.

Hi Judy,
As in StarTrek if you throw in a little sci-fi, Mingo can go aware we want to take him.

Hi Judy,
Meant to type that we can take Mingo any where we want with a little sci-fi. Suzy

Hello Judy,
Nope, I don't care, but you do mean that he was born 100 years earlier--right? Those shows were in the 1870's I think.
Happy Writing,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
Mingo was alive in the 1700's so he would be born later, in the 1800's. Is later the right terminology? I am soooo confused. LOL
Take Care,
Judy

Hi Judy,
I shall join you in that 'confusion'.....
I meant that in the DB show timeline, he would have been born 100 years before those other shows. But, if you are putting him in them, you could play with time and have him born in the 1800s' I suppose. !@#@@!@#!! Now, I am very confused............. I need some caffine!!!
Good Evening,
Rebecca

Mingo was born 100 years earlier.
And with a little sci-fi thrown in, Mingo can be taking me to dinner and a movie tonight!
Judy, I'd think the only trouble would be in taking Mingo as you know him - with the world he lived in 100 years before - into a different era and not end up confusing yourself while writing the story. Suzy takes him as we know him, and transports him to the future - in tact. To blend him in 100 years later one would have to leave some of his world behind and assimilate him into the future. It's certainly do-able though and sounds exciting! I think you should just do what you feel. If you look for approval, it might not be the best advice. Remember some of the greatest writers were not even recognized in their own time and died in poverty; only to sell millions of copies of their books 100 years later! John Keats was so sure he wasn't going to be remembered that he ordered his epitaph to read "Here lies one whose name was writ in water."

...and I meant that as a general statement for all of you writers, there is no pressure on you in particular, Judy, to write the Great American Novel!!

i have an idea for you great writters of mw which we have many for a cross over story of mingo-manolito.remember that they are neither real.so why not make mingo an apache warrior instead of cherokee.manolito and mingo run into each other starting out a enemies but in order to stay live have to work together in a life and death adventure and fine how much alike they are.both very intelligant, know how to take care of themselves.both strong men but with a gentle side.both lost their mothers when they where young and talked of them with deep love and had rich powerful fathers that wanted them to be like them in which both rejected and in the course of staying alive become life long friends.

Mingo could become Mingo's grandson for a workable time frame. So many Cherokee were forced to relocate so the western location for a Mingo grandson might work.

Hi Ladies,
I am in the middle of writing a story right now, but I will give what you said some thought. I have at least five ideas for stories. Most of them in Mingo's time.
Suzy has been wonderful helping (coxing) me through my jitters of writing my first story. I am having writers block right now, so Suzy and a friend of hers are going to put their heads together and give me some suggestions.
Well thats enough from me for now. Again thank-you for your ideas.

Judy

Hi Cathy,
What a great idea for a story. I don't remember High Chaparral, so it would be difficult for me to do. But I am sure that their is someone that could take your idea and make it into a story.
Or better yet maybe you could write it!
Funny I don't remember the show but the song is running through my mind. WEIRD!
