Yeah, I worked in software configuration management for years, which means I took instructions from the developers and ran the sw to make sure it ran the way the developers MEANT it to. I was too burned out at night to play on pc at home, so rarely did. Then when I started too, I realized home pc was totally different and my sister was totally perplexed why I had to learn simple functions at home and had trouble maneuvering the internet! So I can definately relate!

    Hello All,
I believe that the picture of Mr Ames in a swimtrunk probally wont be found anytime soon. His modesty probally made sure he got all the copies, and there might not be any for the public. I have been looking for that one for a long time too. But Im still working on it. Any picture of him is a good one.

By then she says my Dads "swim trunks" as we called them, came mid-thigh and were very modest by today's standards. Gosh, I think he still has them packed in a drawer somewhere!

Omigosh, has anyone ever read The Count of Monte Cristo? Looks VERY complicated. Too much for me I'm afraid. I couldn't even follow the plot summary online. I mean, I got a general idea but couldn't discuss any details. I tried to conquer War and Peace once. Even tried renaming the characters to Fred, Joe, Mary etc. to follow them more easily - still got too confused, which led to ambivalence.

      Hi Keats,

Have I read The Count of Monte Cristo??? Hah, hah, hah. I had to read it when I was in 10th grade ... and in French! I don't know whether I have ever read it in English. However, even in French, the plot was not nearly as complicated as some other French novels I had to read in college, especiallly those written by George Sand. By the way, the title of the French version of Count is "Histoire D'Une Revanche" ... Story of Revenge. There are indeed a lot of characters in War and Peace, but I trudged my way through it ... in English. I had to read Dostoyevsky when I was in college ... I hated that. I did read Dr. Zhivago (on a lark!) and did manage to finish it. It's amazing that they were ever able to extract the main story from that book and put together such a good movie.

You had to read it in HIGH SCHOOL? Yikes. I think I've told you before I'm a BIG Shakespeare fan, and always enjoyed it - but War and Peace makes Shakespeare look like Dick and Jane! (at least to me) Totally different styles - obviously, I just can't tolerate the writing I guess. I imagine EA mother read The Count in Russian! Hey! That's like COMBINING it with War and Peace! (ugh) Hmmm, I wonder why she liked it so much? I recognized the name Edmund Dantes but never put much thought in it beyond that.

There was a recent article in which Ed Ames said that his mother was a romantic ... so maybe she sort of identified with Mercedes (Edmund Dantes' love interest) or maybe she liked the name or maybe she just liked the story a lot. I read a lot of "hefty" books when I was in high school ... in sophomore year, the English class was rather rigorous, plus I had a study hall that I usually used to read biographies and heavy novels. When I was in college, I took several French literature classes, so I had to read some pretty "deep" books in French ... it was very, very painful for me, because I absolutely hated some of them. The writing in classic Russian novels is extremely wordy and the scope of the stories is rather large, which makes the books rather long. With some Russian writers, I think they were competing with their French counterparts to be as obscure as possible and fill up as many pages as possible. When one HAS to read a book to pass a class, then one reads it ... like it or not!

For me, War & Peace is like Dick & Jane as compared with Shakespeare! My husband teases me, because I prefer to read novels that are at least 700 pages and have small print.

That was quite some time ago ... almost forty years at this point. I don't so much remember the names of the authors or their works ... they were pretty much the typical French authors of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries that are considered essential to a Bachelor's Degree in French literature, although my degree was specialized in Language & Linguistics, the art of forming phrases correctly and speaking in Parisian dialect. At the time, I much preferred the American and British novels of the same vintage that I had to read in Rhetoric and Literature classes. Even in the years after college, some of the translated Japanese books of the same timeframe were much more appealing to me.

This comment is a little late in coming, but I haven't been to this website for a while. I read The Count of Monte Cristo years ago in college, but not as a required book. Every night after a hard day studying linguistics I treated myself to a bedtime read of something fun: Monte Cristo, all of the Three Musketeers books and T.E. Lawrence's The Seven Pillars of Wisdom. (Don't ask me why I thought that last one was fun, but it was for me and I enjoyed it immensely.)

As for Mrs. Urick naming her last child Edmond Dantes, I always thought it was because she had so many children and had just plain run out of names when he was born.

I read Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo as a child, by choice. Le comte de Monte Cristo is still a book at home. Dumas père et Dumas fils have written wonderful stories , often misrepresented in movies, as Hugo have been as well. Très facile en français. Histoire d'une revanche ? pas sur mon bouquin; le debut d'une section peut-être.

My Daniel Boone DVD's came in the mail yesterday. 5 full seasons worth. So, last night I watched DVD's 1-4 of Season 1. I don't really remember that first season. It was interesting to see Leslie Nielson and many of the other actors who are in that first season. It is easy to see that the writers were trying to develop characters to see which ones melded together. I enjoyed them and my husband even watched 2 1/2 parts with me and enjoyed it. It'll probably take me a good week to get through season 1. When I start watching, it's hard to stop! Anyway, I'm enjoying and looking forward to all of the seasons as I go along.

Jo, you can go back and use any old general entry that you want. The reason I suggested using a general entry each month for topics that do not relate to the an entry is that there were discussions of unrelated issues being added just any topic. Sometimes it was hard to find something that had been said.

You can always bring back an old topic for more discussion.

While watching the DB series, I became interested in Albert Salmi. Now, I knew he committed suicide (very tragic to my way of thinking, but who knows what demons lurk in our hearts and minds) and I came across this web page where Ed Ames had a memory of Albert Salmi. Thought you guys might find the article interesting. If not, then so be it!

Barb, these articles you're digging up are fascinating. This one was particularly interesting too -- but Israel Boone was NOT killed by Indians (that was James Boone); Israel died at the Battle of Blue Licks, one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War. Hugs y'all: Paula

Thanks for that info Paula. I merely posted what Darby Hinton wrote. Wasn't he just the cutest little boy you ever did see?! I just love those freckles! What really took me most was that Fess Parker really was a 'father figure' to Darby Hinton. What a lucky boy Darby was to have such a tremendous mentor huh?

I actually have a book on Daniel Boone, but only got part way through it. I think I'll pick it back up again and start from the beginning. It's always interesting to hear what other people actually know about Daniel Boone, the man.

Again, Paula, thank you for your information (and I DO appreciate it). Actual history is always more informative than 'TV history' unless it's the Biography or History channel!

Actually Darby is right. Blue Licks was a revolutionary battle but with far more Indians than British. According to Boone's own words in the Draper manuscripts and several early historys he was beside Israel when he was killed by an Indian. My husband and I were there the day Darby and Ed were filming at Blue Licks with the rangers talking about it.The show is not a "TV history" but a fact based history airing on PBS.Blue Licks has a great web site and they are having their annual reenactment soon.

I'm currently ready "Daniel Boone: The Life and Legend of an American Pioneer" by John Mack Faragher. It's a little different from all of the other Boone biographies because this one deals with the folklore of the colonial settlers and it got mixed with the Daniel Boone life story. Good stuff, but maybe not right as an introduction to Boone's life.

Ed looks rather spiffy in that suit, including that bulky pendant. That was the thing in the 70's, wasn't it? lol, that young man beside him doesn't appear to have been ready for any paparazzi. Ed, on the other hand, acts as if posing was his habit. lol!

The Syracuse Nationals are going on this weekend. Huge classic car show in the Northeast. There will be a 1966 Batmobile replica there, one of only a handful that exist. The original one is in a museum in LA. Adam West and Julie Newmar (the original CatWoman) will be here signing autographs with it. And for my six degrees of seperation, the man who designed the original Batmobile also designed the custom Thunderbird that is pictured with Ed Ames (and two teen girls) for the Sounds of '68 TV special. (The TV special which only exists for viewing now at the UCLA archives and the William S. Paley Media Center in NYC.) Ed Ames sang 5 songs on that show. If anyone cares. Or not.

      Well Jeepers,

Let me see if I can link the goings on in my neighborhood to Ed Ames/Mingo like you did, Keats.   In Northeast, PA(and that is a little town 7 miles east of me) it is the big Cherry Festival.  I am surrounded by many fruits here..........let me rephrase.  I live in the country surrounded by acres of vineyards, those big purple Concord grapes, but they're not ripe yet.

Up the road, apple orchards, cherry trees, peach trees, strawberry fields, blueberry patches, and when I went for my walk out in the fields behind my place, the bushes are full of blackberries, still green, but lots of them.

And in the little town of Waterford about ten miles west of me, they are celebrating their Heritage Days.  Waterford is known for a stopping over place by George Washington, when he was a surveyor I believe.  So I guess that would be the connection, not to Mr. Ames, but to Mingo.  He met George Washington didn't he?  Hmmmm in one of my favorite episodes,  First in War, First in Peace.  I know it's fiction, and Mingo is fiction, but oh what very fine fiction.

      Again enjoy the weekend,

      Susie

Actually I've corresponded with the guy who wrote about both the Batmobile and the '68 Thunderbird in a Classic car magazine. He interviewed the designer. In 1968, the fact that the Thunderbird was designed by the same guy that designed the Batmobile was a BIG thing and was part of the big draw for the show - which was the culmination of pop band competitions that had been held all over the country (for months before they made it to the TV special) and was sponsered by Singer Sewing Machine Co. Ed Ames was chosen as host because his star was so bright at the time and the teens loved him to boot. The pic of him with the car was one of the promo shots. Adam West was also a big star at the same time as Ames, and competed for ratings against DB. I thought someone might find it interesting as we've discussed other things from that era. You aren't making fun of me are you? It's hard to tell when you are only reading something.

Not much chance with Paley Center. I would love to see Ames sing 5 songs that were solo hits for him!

The only thing I can connect Ed to is that here in Monroeville, PA he and his brothers performed at the old Holiday House. I'm almost finished with season 2 of DB. Season 1 was rather disappointing. Closer to the end of season 2 the story themes were much better and did not have so many holes in them. I just finished Cibola and next will be The High Cumberland and then on to season 3.

    Hi Ladies,

Yep, we were on vacation...left on the 19th and just returned this afternoon. My best friend, my husband and I went to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands on the Eastern Shore of Virginia to relax and see the ponies. The campground where we stayed had a 'waterfowl park' which contained all sorts of "beasties"---ever have a close encounter with a 6 foot tall Emu??? He was rather scary looking, but a really nice fellow after all, he ate corn from our hand! There were dozens of Peacocks, llamas, goats, sandhill cranes, egrets and ponies. The peacocks were molting, so we collected tons of beautiful feathers, we would go up each evening to visit and play with them all. Penny had one peacock that attached himself to her each day and the goats climbed our legs!! A neat way to spend a summer eve. The beach was great, we walked, I think, almost to Delaware each morning while my husband fished. One day we watched a guy fight with a 4 foot sting-ray for 2 hours, but he lost it in the end-his line broke.Supposedly they are good to eat--eeck!!! Friday found us at a 'Blueberry Festival' enjoying fresh blueberry pancakes and 100 crafters. "Beasties" and all, we had a great time, great trip, no RV trouble-----until we pulled into our driveway----as my husband checked a 'foot', the door flew back and whacked him in the head--much blood and a very nasty cut, but he refuses to go to the Urgent Care---MEN!!!! Thankfully it isn't too deep so I suppose he will survive. And of course, our son,the 'medic' is out of town! So, Miss Cathy and Miss Barb, you see what I have been up to..... looking forward to new messages and stories. Good luck with your writing Cathy, it sounds interesting.
And to Paula, an on line bookstore?? What type of books do you sell, and how may I find a copy of "Spotlights and Shadows"? I have tried at the Library to no avail.
Off to check on hubby and the 'grand puppy'......

      Hi Barb and All,

Don't feel bad about not like Season 1 as much as the others.  That is your preference and we all know, we as women can have as many preferences as we like. LOL,   I like any of the seasons Mr. Ames and Mingo were in,  but I do like Season 1 because of the more "dark" storylines.

B&W films are hard to do as far as night scenes. way back when.  I am an old B Western movie fan, Hopalong Cassidy, Buck Jones, Tim McCoy,   Hoppy being my favorite.  His first couple of years as Hoppy were much more serious in tone, more dramatic, but it's the same thing as far as being hard to see,  when he and Topper (his white horse) were chasing the bad guys at night......forget about it.  Pretty hard to see, I guess they didn't have the lighting technology down pat yet.

Maybe it was the same with the first season of DB,  heck they weren't even certain they were going to have a Season 2 until our favorite singer/actor/entertainer/person, Mr. Ames  made his "infamous" Johnny Carson tomahawk toss. And that got the public's attention to watch the show.   I try not to mention that toss much, because it irks me that anytime (except for in our group or the DB group I would guess) the name Ed Ames is mentioned it always comes back to that crazy throw,  when there is so much more to this gentleman than that.      Ed Ames is too talented a singer and actor, and too good an American citizen to go down in the books as the man who threw the tomahawk on Carson.

Okay off my little morning soapbox,   back to the dark color of Season 1,  wasn't there a mention once of maybe colorizing Season 1 at one time? In fact I think they filmed that Season in color to begin with.    Although I am a fan of the black and white episodes,  it wouldn't bother me to see Daniel and Mingo and Yad and Natus and Israel, and Becky, and Mima and the rest in color.   Whoever has the "ear" of the Liberation group could maybe suggest that or maybe they already have.   I'd buy another set of Season 1 in color if it came out.

Also I know the old twin brother TV episodes have been done to death, but I don't think anyone did it better than Mr. Ed Ames as CaraMingo and TaraMingo.  I still say he should have been nominated for an Emmy for My Brother's Keeper. No doubt in my mind that was an Emmy winning performance. If you watch,  he not only changed his appearance, that's the easy part,  but he changed his mannerisms, his voice and accent, the way he walked,  facial expressions.  He showed the mystery of Mingo's life before meeting Daniel and the privacy that Mingo sought.  I think we all write Mingo like that.  He only shares his innermost feelings and his personal life when he chooses to share it, and to whom he chooses to share it with.   That's the mystery of our Mingo.

And on that I think I'll retire to my pen, tablet  and cup of coffe and write a little more Mingo.   Isn't it great that Mr. Ames gave us the wonderful gift of Mingo, and that he is inspiring us to want to write more.  I can't wait to read more MW Mingo stories.

      Take care All,

      Susie

My Saturday, I fought the raindrops most of the day.  Every time I got ready to mow my lawn, it poured.  I watched a little DB too,  did a little antiquing,  watched some repeats of some Big 10 college football games.  Won't be long now, the college football season will begin.  Then my Saturdays are set.  Go Penn State!!  Go Nittany Lions and JoPa(that's Coach Joe Paterno to you non college football persons.)

      Hi All,

Well our sun didn't last long,  it is one of those days when the weather changes every five minutes.  Sun, to dark clouds, thunder, downpours, and now it's sunny again.   It's a very strange summer all over it would seem.

      Barb,

I meant to say to you, many times I write my stories like you are now.  My stories usually start with one Mingo scene or scenario and I go from there.  One of my Hoppy stories I wrote the very last scene first, then went back and added the beginning, middle, and title  LOL

I know I should start with an outline and go from there, but alas I don't.   I have notebooks, tablets, even just scraps of paper filled  with ideas, scenes,  dialogue, for future stories.  I even write down interesting sounding names for potential characters.  It's fun and I think Daniel and Mingo are two characters who can get in and out of trouble together in so many ways, in so many places.

      Take care All,

      Susie

I really loved the scenes between Mingo & Becky in High Cumberland. It shows how quickly they bonded and how natural it was for them to become friends. I wish they'd been able to show that with Mingo & Dan. Still, 60s television didn't allow for much of that. When you need a sidekick, you need him right away!

I'm working on a new story, too, but I think it may take a while to pull it together. Character motivation not quite clear yet, though I do know what's supposed to happen.

    Hi Susie,

I didn't mean to speak badly of My Brother's Keeper. It is one of my favorite episodes and I think it's the best evil twin stories I've ever seen. You're spot on when it comes to Mr. Ames' acting; the differences between Caramingo & Taramingo are just right -- not too much to bash us over the head with and not too little that we can't pick up on it on the small screen. I think black & white film shows the actors' skill better than color, but dang! I do wish Liberation would've taken more time putting season one together.

      Hi Hunter,

How are you doing?   I didn't mean to imply that you spoke badly of My Brother's Keeper.  I think we all like that one. It's just when I get on a roll about Mr. Ames' acting abilities I tend to go on and on  LOL.  I love to watch that episode, and yes, of course there is the bare-chested Mingo,  :o)   but there is so much more that he gave to the two characters, and the writing of that episode was so good.

Have a great Sunday,  the sun is actually shining here today.  It's a miracle !!  But then it's only Noon here.

      Take care All,

Hi Susie, Hunter and Everyone who is not having a normal summer!

We are having a "bad" summer for everyone in the PAC NW that does not like it above 75 degrees (and that includes a lot of people.) We are headed to a 5-7 days period of over 90 degrees-94 by Wednesday and Thursday with no rain in sight. No one that I have spoken to in the last few days is looking forward to what is coming.

I wish that I could send it all back East.

Suzy: Thanks, but no thanks! Here in sunny Florida, it is 90F or higher EVERY SINGLE DAY, usually by 7:00 AM and well into the evening. Even when it rains, it's hot. We can hardly wait until August and September when it's apt to be in the low 100's (yes, really) every single day. Why don't you send us some cold weather instead? Susie C. tried, but for some reason it didn't work. Hugs, Paula

Suzy: I must apologize for poking fun at the heat wave in the PAC-NW. Just as we in the South are never prepared for "cold weather" -- (30F or below), those in the PAC NW are never prepared for hot weather. It never even occurred to me that y'all up there, for the most part, don't have air conditioning. According to PRI, y'all are having the hottest weather since temperature records have been kept, with several days at 100F or higher. When we traveled to Chicago many years ago for our eldest daughter's graduation from Navy boot camp, Chicago experienced a heat wave with temperatures hovering at 105F for several days, and dozens of people died. Hot weather, or cold weather, hurricanes, forest fires or drought, extreme weather is no joke, and I apologize for my comment. Hugs, Paula

There's a photo of Ed Ames from the horse ranch for sale on e-bay. The seller originally set the price at $50, but has now changed to a buy-it-now at $19.99, with a "best offer" option. I would think that one might be able to bid $9.50 and win the remaining two photos.

Ed is wearing the same shirt as in the photo where he is standing in front of his horse and has 2 friends with him. The same guy wrote EBAY all across Ed's face, so I too, believe it is on his ranch.

He was at Kentucky that week, we saw them a few days before that weekend. A crew member told us that he would not be filming that weekend because a "so-called fan on one of the fan sites" had sent some hostile emails to an associate, and since this person said they would be there that weekend his plans changed. Security was with them all week. Sad that real fans didn't get to meet him because of the actions of one.

We are currently in Salem, Virginia, which is right close to Roanoke in the southwest section of the state. My husband Bill commented today that he remembered Salem being mentioned on the DB show as the place Daniel always had to go to find the magistrate. I noticed a city sign today, indicating that Salem was established in 1804. So, perhaps the DB writers took a little license with time and location to make Salem a continuing magisterial center from the late 1700's onward. We will get a chance to visit the historic downtown section on Wednesday. I have bene there once before and remember it as being one of those older looking, past-its-prime downtowns with a lot of brick buildings that hug the streets. It will be interesting to see whether it has changed for the better over the past nine years.

We went to Bedford today to visit the WW-II memorial. A very impressive and very artistically-designed memorial. Well worth the trip!

    Best regards,
    Ellen

Correction .. Salem was founded in 1802. I found the city's website and found that my recollection of the date on the sign was wrong. You can read about the history of the city at http://www.salemva.gov/about/history.html and I think most of you will find the last sentence of the second paragraph to be quite interesting.
